The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology performs high-quality research and education in a broad area ranging from atomic and molecular scales to cells and multicellular organisms. The phenomena we study have an impact on our natural environment and living systems. The department is engaged in education programmes in chemistry, molecular biology, medical chemistry, biology and marine sciences as well as at the pharmacy and prescriptionist programmes. More information about us is available on the website: http://cmb.gu.se/english.
The research groups working with medicinal chemistry at the University of Gothenburg are conducting very successful international research on the synthesis and characterisation of compounds with potential biological activity. They are co-localised with research groups in organic chemistry with good access to state-of-the-art equipment in modern laboratories. The position as Full Professor will include research and education in medicinal chemistry, which will contribute to the long-term strengthening of the existing activities within the area.
In the present announcement, we are searching for candidates with expertise and outstanding scientific credentials in medicinal chemistry. The position will be provided with a generous support package including funding for PhD students as well as support for expenditure.
The University of Gothenburg is mobilising in the area of life sciences—a modern building for research and education is planned to be completed by the year 2021. The building that will bring together several departments at the Faculty of Science will be located directly in connection to the medical faculty, Sahlgrenska Academy and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Nearby, you find Sahlgrenska Core facilities with important infrastructure platforms as well as the Swedish NMR Centre with 900, 800 and several 600 MHz instruments. In addition, we have extensive collaborations with AstraZeneca R&D in Mölndal.
Subject area description
The research programme within the framework of the announced position should be complementary to and strengthen the existing activities in the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology. Thus, the research activities within medicinal chemistry should be oriented towards the design and synthesis of bioactive compounds.
The job assignments include developing a strong research programme as well as establishing and leading an independent research group within medicinal chemistry oriented towards the design and synthesis of bioactive compounds. To establish your group, you are expected to apply actively for research funding from national and international research funding organisations.
The job assignments include planning and performing teaching within medicinal chemistry in postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate programmes. The teaching includes lectures, exercises, experiments and examinations in several courses as well as the supervision of doctoral and undergraduate students. To some extent, teaching in organic chemistry may be part of the job assignment.
Management assignments and administrative duties both within and outside the department and at the pharmacy and prescriptionist programmes may be part of the work. Collaboration with the surrounding community is also included in job assignments.
If you have no formal university-level teacher training, you are expected to participate in courses for higher education teaching provided by the university within two years of hiring.
You are expected to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses to learn Swedish as a second language.
The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. A PhD degree or equivalent foreign degree in a subject area relevant to the position is a requirement. Ability to teach in Swedish or English is also a requirement.
Assessment of the applications will be based primarily on scientific merit and secondarily on pedagogical merit; both will be carefully assessed.
When assessing research expertise, emphasis will be placed on research expertise in medicinal chemistry oriented towards the design and synthesis of bioactive compounds. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to renew the research area. The assessment will be based on publications in leading international journals, where quality and impact are given more weight than total production. Documented success in obtaining external funding from national and international funding agencies is meritorious. The assessment will also take into account how the applicant plans to collaborate with research groups within and outside the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology.
When assessing teaching expertise, emphasis will be placed on well-documented pedagogical experience as well as the ability to plan, perform and lead teaching and supervise students. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability of pedagogical rethinking and development of teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels.
Documented administrative merit, leadership, including the ability to lead and develop personnel, as well as ability to interact and collaborate with the surrounding community are also meritorious.
The overall assessment of the applicants will take into account expertise and potential for development, ability to carry out the duties of the position, co-operate with others and contribute to a positive development of the department.
