The research encompasses a broad spectrum of areas, from pure mathematics to applications in technology, the natural sciences, economics and didactics. Research Fellow/Assistant Professor in Computational Mathematics formally based at the Division of Computational Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics.


The duties assigned to teaching staff may comprise educational responsibilities or research, and administrative tasks. Teachers are also responsible for monitoring developments within their subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant to their role as a teacher at a higher education institution. The holder of the appointment as Research Fellow/Assistand Professor will participate in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels.

The main tasks for this position comprise teaching and research. Teaching includes tasks such as course development, supervision of these courses, supervision of thesis work and administration. Research consists of individual studies, participation in ongoing projects and supervision of students at Masters and PhD level.

Research time up to 50% during four years is a possibility

The research focus of the division is on the numerical solution of deterministic and/or stochastic partial differential equations, often in partnership within and outside the University.

The purpose of this employment is that the employee should develop the scientific and pedagogical skills required for a promotion to Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor.


To be qualified for this position, the applicant must have a doctorate or reached equivalent scientific skills not more than 5 years before the end of the application deadline.

Applicants with a doctorate degree, or with the equivalent skills, obtained no longer than 5 years prior to the application deadline will be considered with priority. Applicants with the skills mentioned above, obtained during more than 5 years before the end of the application deadline, will also be considered if illness or parental leave or similar circumstances exist.

Grounds for assessment

As grounds for assessment when appointing a Research Fellow/Assistant Professor, the level of proficiency required to qualify for the appointment shall apply.

For this position the first priority is given to scientific skill, the second priority is pedagogical skill

Especially scientific skills in computational mathematics with a focus on the numerical solution of deterministic and/or stochastic partial differential equations will be primarily considered

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching proficiency as to other conditions of eligibility.

Scholarly proficiency must have been demonstrated through: original research resulting in publication, through planning and managing research and third-cycle courses and study programmes and through the ability to obtain research grants. Scholarly proficiency can also be demonstrated through the ability to achieve results in research through collaboration with others and through the ability to provide information about research.

Teaching proficiency is demonstrated through the ability to convey relevant knowledge and skills, to stimulate students such that they drive their own learning process, to create engagement and interest in the subject area, and the ability to structure and organise both the content and forms of work in relation to the goals of the subject area. In addition, the teaching proficiency must have been demonstrated through the ability to contribute to the development and renewal of education and the ability to reflect on their own attitude to education and the results of their work.

Appointment procedure

The position will be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University on the advice of the Appointment Board. A letter of intent will be required of the applicants who make the short list for the position.

The position is time-limited to 4 years.

The Research Fellow/Assistant Professor will be promoted to a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor if he/she has the required skill and is judged suitable according to the guidelines given in the University employment procedure on p 2.4.2 (LiU-2017-03931).

The University applies individual salary scales based on the experience of the employee and the labour market.
